Screen mirroring, screencasting and screen sharing seems confusing, as all of them are about showing the contents of a device, such as PC, mobile, and tablet, on another screen. If the functioning of screen sharing, screen mirroring, and screencasting is the same so what makes them different from each other.
Screen Mirroring
Screen mirroring is the process in which devices are connected wirelessly with the display screen. It can make a copy of a device screen wirelessly on another big screen. It presents the exact live replica of a device on a big screen. It also facilitates with different modes, such as presenter mode in which a person can examine personal notes while continuously showing the presentation on a big screen. Screen mirroring is useful for presenting the local documents, presentations, images and videos.
Screen mirroring requires compatible software in both device and screen for connecting, for screen mirroring. One of the examples of screen mirroring is Miracast, which is the certification service, introduced by WiFi Alliance. Only devices which are certified by Miracast, are the compatible devices for screen mirroring with each other. Another example of screen mirroring is AirPlay, introduced by Apple. It is a protocol stack used by Apple devices, such as iPad, iPhone and MacBook, to mirror a screen with compatible Apple TV.
Screencasting
Screencasting is also a method of sharing a screen wirelessly, but in screencasting, a digital recording, with voice, of a computer screen is made which is then shared to a big screen through an online application. Screencasting removes the compatibility issues, as it uses an online application which can be run on any big screen device with internet connectivity. It can be used efficiently to cast music, movies, and videos on a big screen.
Example of screencasting is making screen video through an application and then shares the recorded video online on websites, such as YouTube, which has the ability to cast recorded video on a big TV screen, with internet connectivity.
Screen Sharing
As the name suggests, it is the method of sharing a screen with others through an online application. The difference between screencasting and screen sharing is that in screencasting the video was not streamed during recording, but it was cast on a big screen after a complete recording of video. While in screen sharing, there is no recording of the screen as it is shared with others as a live screen through the online application.
One of the advantages of screen sharing is the sharing of the screen with multiple users at the same time, whether they are equipped with big screens HDTV or with mobile phone and PC. It is very efficient in case of online meetings. Example of screen sharing is the sharing of the screen through an online application, such as Skype, GoToMeeting, and Slack.
