Metallics are various types of raw materials which are used in making steel. These materials are metallic iron. They are also called cold iron or cold metallics because they are introduced to the steelmaking process in ‘cold’ form.
The EAF is charged with “cold” metallics, normally steel scrap. Pig iron, DRI and HBI can also be used.
Three types of ferrous/steelmaking metallics
Merchant pig iron and scarp usually have between 94% to 96% Fe content. However, DRI/HBI usually contain 88% to 95% Fe content.
When it comes to demand scrap is the most consumed type of metallics, and accounting for more than 80% of the total steelmaking metallics market.
Types of Scrap
Home scrap is produced at a steel mill during various stages of making steel such as casting, rolling, cutting, trimming, shaving, rejected materials etc. Home scrap is normally sent back to the furnace.
Prompt scrap is made by during manufacturing process for steel made goods such as automotive, white goods etc.
Prompt scrap has various types such as factory bundles (#1 & #2), busheling (#1 & #2) and Borings, Shovelings & Turnings.
Obsolete scrap comes from products which reach its end of life, for instance, old vehicles and recycled building materials. Heavy Melt Scrap (HMS) #1 & #2 and shredded the most common forms.
