Over the past few years, people behaviour has changed, and they prefer to watch videos. YouTube traffic also increased substantially, and more and more people started creating videos for YouTube channels.
But when it comes to monetization, I do not know how much is there for technical professionals.
Is it worth to make videos for YouTube? Can YouTube really make you rich?
It depends on what one aiming to achieve from youtube and what videos they would make.
However, I can tell you a golden rule, remember most people on YouTube watch videos for entrainment. So, if you can entertain people, then yes can make a lot of money. If the answer is no, then it is hard to make money.
There is no harm if you can create a channel, make some videos and be on YouTube.
If you want to sell your own products, then you should also use YouTube. It can be a great marketing option for you. Similar for affiliates etc.
But if you want to make money from ads running on YouTube, then you need probably millions of views and thousands of subscribers to make a living on it.
If you are a technical person and making tutorial on a subject, then think about how many views you would get for your videos in a month. So, ads money would be really little.
Yes, you can be an authority or get some freelancing work maybe if you have thousands of subscribers.
But remember it would take years to get to that stage.
It is around $2 per 1000 views. You would not be paid on a per-view basis.
So, one million views of your video in a month will earn you around $2000. But ask yourself, can your video attract that many views. If yes, go for it.
Think always about your audience.
I think YouTube is now more for kids. Kids do no get bored, and they can watch the same video again and again. Some videos on YouTube got 150 million views in a few months time. You can do the math.
When I say kids, I mean under ten or something.
There is so much rubbish on youtube, and even such videos get millions of views. While a lecture by a Harvard professor would get a few hundred views.
I uploaded over 300 videos on YouTube which had over 100k minutes view-time last year. It is still growing and also has around 800 subscribers. However, I am totally discouraged by monetization. I have now stopped making any more videos. I do not think it is worth the hard work, at least for me.
I also think that technical blogs are not something easy to get success. Most of the successful channels are about entertaining the viewer. Only a few people would spend some time watching boring technical videos.
I bet a video of my one-year-old son talking mumbo jumbo while crawling and playing with toys would get 100 times more views than my whole channel.
