A Carbon capture aim is to combat global warming. It traps the carbon dioxide from emission and transports it to a storage location (mostly underground) for isolation.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2005, it can reduce carbon emissions by 80%-90% compared to plants without carbon capture facility. Carbon capture technology is cost-effective in terms of offsetting carbon. Plants which are operating without such technology can incur more cost to reduce their emissions. The technology can capture 90% of carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and other industrial units.
The carbon capture technology works in three steps:
According to the Centre for Climate and Energy Solutions, in 2017, there were 21 commercial based carbon capture projects in operation while 22 were in the process around the world.
